Underground Booksellers of Johannesburg
Start: Bridge Books, 98 Commissioner Street. Begin with coffee or tea at Bridge Books. Visitors receive a 10-15 minute overview of our work with local booksellers, Johannesburg’s iconic place as a setting and inspiration in South African literature, and a discussion of where the walk will be going. (Bathroom if needed) Along the way, the walk will see a religious bookseller, the site of the original Central News Agency building, and then visit James Findlay Collectibles at the Rand Club (please note, the club is sometimes closed for private functions). The visits booksellers in street markets, a spaza shop, a Nigerian importer, and the exterior of the beautifully renovated City Library. The library is currently closed for repairs to the roof. The visit explains how books move through the underground economy, and discusses the history of bookselling Johannesburg -- from the first black-run library, through the days of censorship and book burning, to the ways new modern readers find books in inventive ways. Other things to note The walk lasts about three hours, but is mostly flat and goes at a leisurely pace. Inside some of the older buildings, there are no ramps or elevators.

Take a close up look inside beehives of the African Honeybee
Join me for a fun, exciting, informative and wonderful experience learning about our amazing indigenous honeybees, Apis mellifera scutellata (the African Honey Bee) - we start with some theory covering safety and PPE, then we learn about the actual bees inside the hive (the different castes and what their life cycles) and what makes them different to other honey bee species. Everyone gets to dress in bee-suits for a hands-on experience where we open a number of beehives and work with the bees. We learn how to identify the different types of bees and understand their respective roles. A highlight is when we get to see the Queen, alternatively we examine identifying features to show that there is a laying queen in the hive. We hope to be able to harvest honey, and then go into the honey room to extract the honey (this is entirely seasonal and harvesting of honey is not always available). Finally, we get to do a honey tasting of various different South African 100% Raw honeys. Its a warm, feel good experience. We will end off with a Q&A session over coffee and homemade cake/cookies. [Your host, Sharon, is an experienced registered beekeeper who gives Beekeeper Training Courses to beginner as well as experienced beekeepers. She is a commercial beekeeper who owns over 400 hives, most of which are placed on farms around Gauteng. Sharon only produces 100% Raw Honey]
