Šta ćete raditi

I will greet each guest at the front gate and introduce myself and my five sheep to them. They will be allowed to pet and feed the sheep. I will share a little about my background and why I love what they will be doing. Then we will go to the spinning studio where we will talk about wool, how it is sheared and washed before dyeing and spinning. Each guest will be given a skein of wool which they will take into the dyeing shed. A dye bath made from natural plants and flowers found in the countryside around my cottage will be ready for their wool. The wool will be dipped into the dye bath and allowed to stay for awhile. Meanwhile, back to the studio where I will teach guests how to card the fleece and hand spin it on a drop spindle and a spinning wheel. Guests will be given the opportunity to try their hand at spinning on the drop spindle. We will then take a tea and coffee break. After the break, back to the dye shed to check on the wool. We will take it out of the bath, rinse it and each guest can take theirs away with them. If time allows, I will do a weaving demonstration and each guest can try for themselves.
Other things to note
Guests should wear suitable clothing for handling fleece.

I am a North Carolina native who moved to a small country village in Ireland 13 years ago. I have always been a passionate textile crafter and once I moved to the Irish countryside and had my own sheep, I started teaching others the traditional crafts of spinning, dyeing from nature and hand weaving. I hold spinning and dyeing workshops from my cottage studio and love passing on this knowledge to others, be they novices or those with some experience. I also love my sheep and enjoy the enthusiasm that others show when they meet them.

I’m finally getting around to writing about our recent visit with Sandra and her sheep. This was a highlight on our recent family vacation to Ireland. Sandra was very accommodating from the beginning; opening up her studio to coincide with our visit. Her love of her sheep and fiber arts is obvious and she has accomplished much reinvigorating traditional arts in the area. We enjoyed spending time with the sheep and learning from Sandra about spinning and dyeing wool. Sandra is warm and passionate about her craft and I left hungry for more. I hope our paths cross again!

I had such a great time on this experience. I love to knit and so was happy to see this experience available. I was all by myself and so I got my own private lesson! I met the sweet sheep and fed them a few handfuls of nuts, learned about natural dyes and helped dye some yarn that I got to take home with me! We dyed yarn using hibiscus and cow parsley that were picked from the lane right outside Sandra’s cottage. Sandra tried her very best to teach me to spin but I think I was pretty hopeless! ;) but I still had fun trying. I got to do some hand carding and Sandra let me take home the fiber that I carded. I also got to take home the yarn that I spun. I got to take home a ton of material! It was really amazing! Sandra’s husband Bob made us tea and we sat together in the living room of their gorgeous little 200+ year old cottage and chatted and drank tea. I mean, how much better could a rainy Sunday get?!?!?! Sandra had some hand dyed and hand spun yarn for sale and I wanted to buy all of it but my husband was there so I had to show some restraint. He doesn’t understand why I needed to buy ALL her yarn. Hopefully he’ll learn.

I went Sandra’s class with seven other friends to the three hour experience. I can honestly say that it was the highlight of our entire trip… It was just a wonderful class: intriguing, informative, and cultural. I highly recommend this to anyone. I’ll take this class again. Sandra and her husband Bob we’re warm and welcoming. We were all thrilled and have brought the experience up every single day. THANK YOU, Sandra!

Sandra opened her home to me and my mother and shared her passion for woolcrafting. After meeting her sheep and getting to pet and feed them, we got to learn about and try out carding and dyeing wool that she had prepared beforehand. It was exciting to be able to dye with natural plant material and to learn about the different processes for different dyeing techniques. The spinning session was full of laughs and lessons as we got the feel for the spinning wheel and drop spindles. In the end we came away with great memories, new knowledge and a few beautiful skeins of yarn!

Sandra and her sheep are delightful! She introduced us to her fluffy sheep and a previous orphaned lamb from the neighbors. She shared fascinating details about the difference between the breeds wool. Sandra taught us various methods for dying, carding, and spinning - each of which we each had the opportunity to try for ourselves. I especially enjoyed using the drum carder. Learning about the different things found in nature for dying wool was also absolutely fascinating. Sandra has a warm, friendly personality and personalized the experience to exceed my expectations.
