Šta ćete raditi

This isn't your typical language lesson.. far from it! You will receive a formal lesson on French-Canadian vernacular- with a special focus on blasphemy! We can chat over coffee in the park or over poutine at a local Frites Alors. Expect a lot of interesting information, and loads of laughter. Just check the reviews :)

Using my experience as a language teacher, I'll offer insight on semantics (how concepts are expressed through words) and morphology (the study of words and what they mean). As a native French Canadian, I will teach you to pronounce and understand some our most popular Québécois expressions. This experience will allow you to view our culture from a different angle and better relate to why we speak the way we speak.

You’ll do fun oral exercises and go home with a document highlighting Quebec lexicon that you can share with your friends. For example: 'en titi ' is an our way of saying "very" in Québécois. Ex: il est drôle EN TITI (he's VERY funny!). We'll focus on the antiquity of the language and learn why we say 'char' for car and 'piastre' instead of dollar.

BIN LA!

I have specifically designed this experience to suit the needs and interests of travellers. This experience is one i'd seek while abroad to truly understand and integrate into a foreign culture. Note: this lesson is mainly conducted in English but French speakers are more than welcomed!

Just read the reviews- this experience is well worth both time and money! Spend an hour with a trilingual graduate of Literature who will baffle you with Québec's language-related history and teach you about 'Joual: our local dialect. Where does it comes from? How do we pronounce the slang words?

Learn the history of state-church's domination and its impact on Québecois people. Learn about the 'language police' and the efforts made to monitor the french language. Learn all about profanities: tabarn@k d'esti d'caliss!

This one-of-a-kind experience looks at Quebec's famous french 'socialect' from a historical and cultural perspective: an easy way to truly connect with Québec.

Gde ćete biti

We'll meet at FRITES ALORS (433 Rachel street), a delicious local poutine restaurant where we can eat and talk. The poutine is not included. If you prefer not to eat poutine, there's a nearby 'boulangerie' where we can pick up a coffee, juice or a sandwich and have the experience in the park right in front of Frites Alors. :)

What an amazing experience! We learned so much from Alissa, not only about the Quebecois language, but also about the historical and unique societal influences that have created this area of Canada. Don't miss the chance to take this class!

Alissa is a wonderful host with a great lens to share the culture of Montreal and Québécois. I learned a ton in the session and loved how friendly and authentic Alissa is!

Some decades ago, a favorite professor said something that stuck with me. He said that language is pure culture. If you want to understand French Canadian culture better, Alissa's thing is a great place to start. I think that what she has to share is equally valuable to someone like me who doesn't really speak a word of French as it would be to any native French speaker not from Canada. When it comes right down to it, her presentation might be darn useful for the locals as the origins of local curse-words are so archaic that even the well-schooled Quebecois might not fully know what they are actually saying when they are cussing someone out.

Absolutely a must if you’d like to understand Quebec on a deeper level. I had no idea what I was getting myself into, I thought maybe just a bit of a language lesson, but it was so much more. Alissa is passionate, thoughtful, personal, and has a contagious energy about her. Language is more than just a means of communication and Alissa has an incredible way of educating participants about that through both a reflection of her own experience and the shared experience of the quebecois. Additionally, her ariel class was also incredibly fun. As circus is a big part of the culture as well, this class is a must. Expect to get a good stretch and work out in!

This is a fantastic class for anyone who wants to understand the history and culture of Montreal in more depth. Although it's nominally about language, it's totally accessible to non-French-speakers and the information you learn provides a lot of context on why Montreal is the way it is. Alissa provided materials with the class, and my Montreal friends were all fascinated by what she had put together - especially the guide on how to curse like a local! I have been coming to Montreal for over a decade and this class really improved my understanding of the city and its people. If you're planning a trip to Montreal, this would be a good class to schedule near the start of your visit so you can take advantage of what you learn.

This experience was definitely worth it, I learned a lot of things that I didn't know about and didn't think I would learn. And honestly I was thrilled at this new knowledge. I truly recommend this experience.
