Hi folks
Double Kiss is going for a re-fit in the next few months.
I'll let you know when she's ready sometime next year.

Double Kiss
Staying on a houseboat (she's actually a wide-beam canal boat) like Double Kiss is quite different from a house or a flat. Most canal boats are self-contained. Which means they can move around the country without needing a land line; much like a caravan.

First off: if you like, while staying on DK, your host will always endeavour to take you somewhere lovely during your stay, and usually moor you up somewhere else overnight (or more times depending on the length of your trip), then bring you back to your starting point at the end of your trip, I won't be staying on board, by the way.
Or, you can stay moored up (always in a lovely spot) on the canal/river/harbour and simply watch the rest of the world pass you by.
It's your choice.

We've spent over a year living on DK since buying and bringing her from Northampton, via London, to the West Country. And, while she probably won't be awarded the 'sparkling clean' rating any time soon, her modern, simple, uncluttered space has been a wonderful home for us until we moved to Bristol in July (2018). We now use her as our 'home from home' and my wife's floating art gallery and studio in the Spring and Summer (see pic).
Originally, in 2007, she was commissioned by the snooker player, Ronnie O'Sullivan, hence her name.
Double Kiss is primarily set up for a couple, but one more person can be accommodated, if they don't mind sleeping on 'Ronnie's' huge sofa in the living space. (Linen & pillows provided.)
You may check-in at any time from 12am until 4pm(ish) and your check-out will be at around the same time.
Sorry, but no toddlers on board: the canal is only about a metre and a half deep, with little current; but it's still wet, and cold. Also, the Avon river is deep and does have a current and Bristol harbour is also deep. Furthermore, there is a wood-burning stove (smokeless coal) in the living space which gets rather hot!
So no children under 12.
(2 new life-jackets and 3 fire extinguishers on board)
All pets are welcome...with in reason!
2 medium sized dogs is the maximum. Cats are also welcome, with its own cat flap in the cratch.
*Please, please, be sure to 'poop and scoop every time' around the towpath and the boat.
There are house slippers provided. Use them if you remember, at least in the bedroom, especially if it's raining and muddy out.
DK is like the Tardis inside and, when the weather's good, there's plenty of space on the roof too. Also the cratch (pic) has a bit more privacy leading from the bedroom.

DK moves regularly, so if you fancy a trip up or down the canal (or into town and back, perhaps); or a tour around Bristol harbour, etc., your host will arrange that for you. Whatever happens, the engine needs turning over (for an hour or two) to heat the boiler for hot water, and keep the batteries topped up. So while I'm on board (usually from between 12 to 4), I'm quite happy to steer you somewhere nice. One plan in the countryside, could be that I drive you to another mooring then bring you back to your starting place on another day. (If you're wondering, I cycle back.)
But, of course, it's completely up to you.

DK is getting on a bit now, so she has her idiosyncrasies and shortcomings. I'll give you full instructions as to how everything works before I leave you. And you are free to call me at anytime, and if it's serious, I can be there in an hour or so; or if you're in Bristol harbour, 10 minutes.

1) Electricity: 12 volts.
Electricity comes from the engine and, on sunny days, some power from the solar panels, via the batteries.
As mentioned, the engine needs turning over to keep the batteries happy and heat up the boiler, so I'll be careful to show you how to turn it on and off (it's like a car's ignition) if the battery seems low and I can't be there immediately.
In the bedroom there are a number of usb sockets for your phones, which can be charged at all times. However, please try to charge up your laptops, etc. while the engine is running.
Please turn off all lights when you're not using them, especially overnight (also like a car).
Sorry, but things like hairdryers, irons, toasters, microwaves, etc., tends to trip the fusebox, so you'll have to live without them, I'm afraid.
There's a small fridge and freezer (it and the usb sockets are the only thing that's on all the time). It has a slightly tricky catch!
Like most boats, lighting is minimal and DK uses LEDs throughout. For reading in bed there is one, fixed, spotlight, and I've provided a couple of strong torches, which can be very useful, of course, when going out at night in the countryside.
The washing machine in the bathroom can be used only while the engine is running. One cycle takes an hour.
There's a TV in the living room with a PS3 console for DVD's/CD's or games, with a small library of videos. But since it rarely gets a decent signal, there are no regular channels or antenna.
DK is not moored in a marina, therefore she has no dedicated WIFI. However, I do quite well on the boat with my iPhone (4G) using the 'personal hotspot' for my laptop.

2) Heating: Log-burner (pic) and one, stand-alone Calor gas heater.
The log-burner works very well and is simple to use. It works best with newspaper, kindling, some dried wood and smoke-less coal (all provided). To avoid excess smoke, do keep the burner's doors closed after lighting, and remember to keep the boat well-ventilated.
The Calor gas heater is useful in the morning in the bedroom, before you've got the log-burner going. You probably won't need both at the same time.

3) Gas cooker: Calor gas cylinders.
The full-size cooker has 5 rings (one of the small ones is a bit shy to light); an oven; and a grill.
The grill does have a tendency to turn itself off after a while. So it'll deal with toast but not much else. (It works again after a few minutes.)

4) Water/hot water
DK has a large cistern. However, it's not advised to drink straight from the tap. I'll supply you with a couple of gallons of tap-water for drinking to be going on with.
The engine will heat up the hot-water tank. At night (all engines must be turned off before 7pm) this should be enough for 2 quick showers and a little bit more for washing-up, etc.; with endless running hot water while the engine is running.
The loo has a large septic tank so you won't ever have to pump it out yourself. However the S-bend is rather narrow so it does need a few flushes to get the poo down the pipe. It has 3 settings: 'Eco,' 'Flush,' and 'Drain.'
'Eco' for a wee; and we suggest a combination of all three settings for a poo.
Start with, 'Drain,' 'Flush,' then 'Drain,' then 'Eco.'
And, if it's still recalcitrant, give it a few minutes and try the combination again.
I do apologise.
Please use only normal toilet paper, nothing else.

Double Kiss' king-size bedroom is at the front (the bow: the pointy bit) of the boat, and this leads on to a private patio (known as a cratch).
There is plenty of space, with two wardrobes and a modest dressing table and mirror.
Either side of the bed are 4 USB sockets for easy overnight phone charging.
All clean linen throughout.

The Bathroom
Coming back towards the aft (the stern: the stubby bit) we have the bathroom in the middle of the boat (known as, er, the middle bit).
As you can see there's no actual bath in the bathroom. However, there is an large, comfortable shower; a loo with power flushing (see note above); and a sink with hot water.
Plenty of clean towels, etc..

The Living Room
Is in the large L-shaped sofa, as you can see. The wood burner is here too.
You'll find a small library of books here (please take any of the novels home); a couple of golf clubs and balls (a putter and a wedge); a couple of croquet mallets and balls, etc

The Kitchen
Has a fridge and a gas cooker. A sink with hot water and plenty of work surfaces, as you can see.
All cutlery, crockery, tea towels, etc. (and lots of condiments) are provided.

All the main switches are in the kitchen.

Dostupno gostima
The whole boat.

DK moves regularly. She is right now near Bath. If you give me a few days notice I'll make sure that DK is moored close to where your car is parked. Overnight car-parking is free, except for Bristol harbour which (as of this year, sadly) became paying. Now it appears to cost about 14 pounds.
Sorry about that. However, because of this, I've decided to set the mooring fee in the harbour (usually 27 pounds a night) down to 20 pounds.
