Shawneehaw Cottage is a newly rennovated Cottage originally constructed in 1941 by C.O. Matney, one of the founding members of the community. It offers pastoral views from two covered porches, a private yard, access to open fields and lots of quiet privacy in a unique community. This is an amazing property for stargazers, families, and anyone looking for a retreat from the grid but is also conveniently located about 3 miles from Banner Elk and Valle Crucis.

This house is located on rural farm land adjacent to state owned forest. It is in a unique community which was established in the late 1800's. This house was build by one of the founding members, C.O. Matney and his wife Rosa who originally lived in the center portion of the old barn located on this property. After years of disrepair this house was totally rennovated from the ground up. A portion of the original siding is visable in the front entry way and the original ceiling is visabie in the kitchen/dining area. The framing and much of the siding were wormy chestnut. During the rennovation, our french bulldog, Turtle claimed the house as his own, hence the name, Turtle House. This house is located on what has been a family farm on some level since before 1941, It was farmed by Mr. Matney for tobacco, vegetables and hay. Mr. and Mrs. Bliss, the current owners, ran the farm on a smaller scale growing small fruit such as strawberries, and blueberries as well as hay. Currently, it has become more residential but we still mow hay which the neighbors feed to their catte and horses. While the barn still stands, the only animals living here are dogs, deer, and sometimes a 3 legged bear that wanders through.

The location of the Turtle House is unique. It is in an old established community which is great for biking, exploring, dogs and children. The Matney Liberty Church about a mile away was established in the 1800s and build by the local community. Its cemetary hosts many of the founding community members grave sites. The center portion of barn located behind the Turtle house was once the original home of C.O. Matney.

The property is part of a larger property once owned by Hester and Bill Smith, members of the original community dating back into the 1800’s. Although more people have moved into the community, many of the residents are descendents of the original founding families. The host and co/host of Shawneehaw Outpost are 7th or 8th generation descendents of the Smith Family.
While there is some traffic on the road, for the most part this is a very quiet spot. The stars and fireflies dominate the evening. There is abundant wildlife, including small animals such as peep frogs, rabbits, opossums, raccoons, and turkeys and large animals including deer (lots of deer) , coyotes, and bears. The property offers open fields, and Crab Orchard Creek is across the road. The "Episcopal Mission" property, owned by the state, borders the property at the tree line. Scenic NC194 connects Valle Crucis and Banner Elk. This road is a beautiful winding mountain road also locally known as "Winding Stair Gap" and is a local favorite for sight-seeing, photographers, and bicyclists.

I am a professional educator and licensed professional Counselor. I live on a small farm with my husband were we have horses and dogs. We enjoy horse back riding at a variety of locations in the United States and spending time with family and our dogs. I enjoy landscape painting and spending time out doors. We love the quiet unique atmosphere of Banner Elk, and the Shawneehaw Township. There is nothing better than making S'mores, watching lightning bugs and listening to the peep frogs on a summer night.

You are welcome to use the lawn and adjoining field to hang out or look around. Shawneehaw Outpost hosts several other listings so be prepared to share the 8 acre space with other guests and wildlife. We ask that guests observe quiet hours after 10 and before 8 in respect to other guests. (sorry but we don't have control of the neighbors who aren't always as quiet as we would like). We try not to bother guests unless needed but are closeby and ready to help if you need anything so don't hesitate to message or call.
