Traditional apartment with roof terrace in a friendly, local area. Close to Valletta and many other world class sites of historical interest.

We are now following the guidelines laid down by AirBnB with regard to the current health crisis - the apartment is steam-cleaned between bookings, hand sanitizer is provided on arrival and all other possible precautions taken to ensure your stay with us puts no-one at risk.

We are trying to keep the house in a period style - it was built in 1948 in the traditional manner - Maltese tiles, covered balconies - 'gallerias.' We are both artists and have a studio on the middle floor - we also collect local vintage ceramics, advertising and other memorabilia and have a great interest in the local history.

Gde ćete biti

Bormla, Малта

The Three Cities offer an intriguing insight into Malta and its history. Left largely unvisited, these cities are a slice of authentic life as well as a glimpse into Malta's maritime fortunes.

The Three Cities can rightly claim to be the cradle of Maltese history, as Vittoriosa, Senglea and Cospicua have provided a home and fortress to almost every people who settled on the Islands.

Their harbour inlets have been in use since Phoenician times: the docks always providing a living for local people, but also leaving them vulnerable when Malta's rulers were at war. As the first home to the Knights of St. John, the Three Cities' palaces, churches, forts and bastions are far older than Valletta's.

The local communities here celebrate holy days and festas as nowhere else on the Islands. The most spectacular events are the Easter processions when statues of the "Risen Christ" are carried at a run through crowded streets.

We have great local markets and some old traditional shops - my barber around the corner has been working there continuously since the early 1950s and never changed the shop! There are some very good restaurants and local bars around the area.

We are two friends who have known each other for over 35 years - we decided to pool our resources, get out of London and move to Malta, which we have both known and loved for many years. We bought this house in the 3 Cities - in the Grand Harbour opposite Valletta in 2016 from an old local family, whose father was a cabinet-maker for the cruise lines in the docks below. We moved here because it is a traditional, very local area, fully protected as a Heritage Site under EU law, which means that the local architecture and environment have to be preserved. This area was the original fortress of the Knights of Malta - before they built Valletta and is steeped in character and history. We have been researching this and can direct you to many fascinating local treasures not on the main tourist routes. We both trained in Fine Art and Abi was an art teacher for nearly 30 years - we are creating an art studio and other craft workrooms, both so that we can get back to doing our own work and also provide lessons. For example, our friend, John runs a local museum which is a house he bought 40 years ago. He discovered an entire Medieval floor underneath the house, complete with kitchen, stone and wooden arches and beams with carvings and graffiti from the time of the Knights and before. Also prehistoric temple remains in the well. He now reckons there is yet another floor or tombs below to be excavated dating back to the Punic era. We are both keen cooks and have the biggest local market in Malta on Tuesdays where we buy excellent local wild fish in season, caught that morning, fresh local vegetables, wine and fruit. Then we have a great flea-market on Sundays where we have found many old Maltese treasures for the house - lighting, pictures, ornaments. We want to keep the house in the old style as much as possible - it was built in 1948 after the heavy bombings of WW2 flattened much of this area. Built in traditional style, we have all the original patterned floor-tiles and the covered balconies -'gallerias' that are uniquely Maltese, even the old well in our yard has been restored and is working again. We are letting our top floor and front roof terrace, which have a separate entrance through the hallway. The rooftop has a view on Senglea and the docks, with Valletta in the distance. The ferry to Valletta from the bottom of the steps takes 4 minutes - we have Valletta on our doorstep but our village is very quiet at night-times. The locals are very friendly and we have more than our fair share of the local Festas and processions, even re-enactments of the French occupation of the 1800s. There are many good places to eat and drink locally, especially in Birgu and Senglea, which are a short stroll away. There is a nice local beach at Rinella - also walking distance, and then other areas to swim further round the coast, which are all local rather than on the tourist map. If you have an interest in history and local culture, our area provides a restful alternative to the usual tourist hot-spots, while being in easy reach of nightlife in the capital.
