I am committed to providing you with a safe, clean, pleasant place to stay in a unique atmosphere. I genuinely enjoy hosting and making new friends.
Taiwan is my home. Having lived here off-and-on for almost 3 decades, I can share some perspective on how Taiwan has changed over time. (Lately, however, I have been making extended trips back to my other home.)
For those who want to learn more about what makes Taiwan unique, I'm happy to help you find whatever you might be looking for.
Things I love about Taiwan include the lively activity of city life at street level, Taiwanese people's friendly, non-confrontational way of speaking, the country's freedom of speech, democratic elections and absence of censorship, and its stunningly gorgeous high mountain landscapes and lush semi-tropical forests. I also appreciate Taiwan's marvelous system of national health insurance.
I love folk festivals and temples, traditional arts--from tea production to Chinese medicine--and take an interest in Buddhism.
Aboriginal villages offer an important authentic view of Taiwan, however, only in a few places, like Smangus, do villagers have enough control over tourism to benefit from it and limit its impact on their culture.
More about me:
My taste in music is eclectic, ranging from American and European jazz to Brazilian and African pop. (Feel free to play music here!)
I also appreciate visual arts--particularly installation art--and as a pastime occasionally make colorful lanterns, or small sculptures in clay. Lately I am making Chinese tea pots.
I use a bicycle as my preferred mode of transportation. I am vegetarian, but I don't expect everyone else to be.
Occasionally I organize "movie nights," bringing people together to watch a film and discuss it (a mix of Mandarin and English usually). I may hold some of these events in the living room, in which case you are more than welcome to join us.
My educational background is in history and anthropology. I follow world news and like to discuss politics, economics, society and culture. I speak English, Mandarin and French.
I worked from home for several years working for an NGO and doing medical editing freelance, but recently took a job at a medical school that involves a long commute. So for now, I'm not at home most of the time. But I'm happy to schedule opportunities to hang out and talk, and to answer whatever questions you have about Taiwan.
I hope to see you in Taipei!
