The Camp Santanoni Historic Area is a very unique location in the Adirondack Forest Preserve. It is considered one of the most sophisticated and distinguished of all of the surviving great camps in the Adirondacks. This National Historic Landmark was created in the late 19th and early 20th centuries by Robert C. and Anna Pruyn, serving as a place to entertain guests and find refuge from city life. Today, the area is a popular day hike destination during summer months, as well as a cross country skiing destination in the colder months. The three Camp Santanoni Winter Weekend events held annually are very popular.

Long Lake BUTTERMILK FALLS Buttermilk Falls: Definitely a nice place to visit and part of the Hamilton County Waterfall Tour. Family picnics, easy walk and a scenic destination that everyone visits. The trail to Buttermilk Falls is only about 0.1 miles. This destination is a great all-round spot for the entire family no matter age, physical ability level or experience. This not a mobility accessible site. The ground is uneven, lots of erosion and can be slippery and muddy during the wet season. Above the falls there is a canoe launch that can be used for boating up the Raquette River to a nice lean-to on a grassy point. Right above the falls there are several rock outcropping, opening up picnic areas and places to relax by the sounds of rushing water. Below the falls there is also picnic spots, as well as swimming areas directly below the falls or a bit further down the Raquette River. The rocky falls are not recommended for climbing or diving from and should be highly respected. There are also picnic benches in the area as well as a hiking trail. The hiking trail is designated as a canoe carry and part of the Northern Forest Canoe Trail. You can hike this trail to the put-in below the falls. Past this put-in there is a herd path along the river to access nice swimming areas downstream as well as attractive views out over the water. Eventually the herd path will connect with another carry trail and eventually end at two lean-tos on the south end of Long Lake. The site is extremely dangerous at both low water and high water, and year-round. There are no lifeguards, no cell phone service in the area and it is located several miles from the nearest emergency crew.

Spend a half-hour flying over the Adirondack High Peaks. See the mountains like you've never seen them before. Seaplane rides are fairly reasonable, and usually available during the summer months on a "catch-as-catch-can" basis. Call ahead to make sure a pilot is available to take you up (there are charters that take priority) and to quote you the current rates for a sightseeing flight. A good estimate is $60.00 for two people for a 15-minute (airtime) flight. Flights are dependent on the weather, and there is no reason to fly in inclement weather. But on a clear day with blue skies, absolutely nothing can compare to the experience! If you go, and Tom Helms is your pilot... tell him WCLamb said "Hello!"

Our exhibit scheduled for 2020 has been postponed until 2021. The museum is not large enough for guests to appropriately social distance, therefore we have determined to make this a year to catch up with accessioning our growing collections, and prepare for next year’s exhibit in 2021. The Museum is indebted to extensive collections of photographs and artifacts generously donated by Susan Pruyn King, the only surviving Pruyn grandchild, and the Tummins and Vroman families, longstanding residents of Newcomb. Camp Santanoni has always prospered from cooperation between town and camp. Today ownership of this beautiful historic site is in the managing hands of the State of New York, but generous support is also provided by the Town of Newcomb and the Adirondack Architectural Heritage (AARCH). The trip into Camp Santanoni is well worth the effort. It’s a moderate walk or bike ride (4.9 miles one way), but visitors can also reserve a horse-driven wagon ride by calling Larry Newcombe at 518-639-5534; 518-480-1743.
