Ruins

Great morning or afternoon trip for families with young children! Just over a 30 minute drive from the property, these relatively untouched Mayan ruins are believed to have been built in the late Pre-classic period (250-550 BCE) as a commercial center to control the production and distribution of salt. While the ruins are becoming more popular for tourists, you can still walk up and down the structures freely. If you arrive early in the morning, you may also find yourselves the only visitors!

Larger than Xcambo, it was home to both the Mayans and the Spanish who continued to expand it after their invasion. It’s on the way to Merida; it has a museum and a cenote (although I’m not sure if the cenote has reopened yet after the pandemic). If you are up for a full day of ruins, you can visit both Xcambo and Dzibilchaltun in a day’s outing.

About an hour drive from the property, these ruins have been excavated and restored recently. Smaller with fewer tourists than Chichen Itza. Also has a cenote that is open to the public.

Uxmal was one of the largest cities of the Yucatán peninsula on the Ruta Puuc (Puuc Route), and at its height was home to approximately 20,000 Maya. Uxmal and other surrounding Puuc sites flourished in the Late Classic Period (around 600-900 AD) before they were overruled by neighboring settlements. A trip to Uxmal should also take in nearby sites of Labna, Sayil, and Kabah which are thought to have been presided over by former rulers of Uxmal.
