Humpback Rocks is a short trail with steep elevation gain, and beautiful western views overlooking the Shenandoah Valley. Great for a half day outing. On a clear day it is one of the best mountain views in the valley. It is a popular trail so I would advise avoiding peak hiking hours.

Humpback Rocks is a short trail with steep elevation gain, and beautiful western views overlooking the Shenandoah Valley. Great for a half day outing. On a clear day it is one of the best mountain views in the valley. It is a popular trail so I would advise avoiding peak hiking hours.
Dark, damp and hidden over 700 feet below the Blue Ridge mountains lies a 4,700’ abandoned train tunnel in the heart of the Crozet Tunnel Greenway. At just over 2 1/4 miles, the crushed stone path offers the explorer a chance to travel back in time to touch the original pin scars from the 1850’s. 170 years later, the tunnel is more cave-like and holds year-round temperatures of 50 degrees. TAKE A FLASH LIGHT OR FULLY CHARGED PHONE WITH LIGHT.

From March 1 to November 30, you will need to have a day use permit to hike Old Rag. This is to limit the number of hikers on this very popular trail. Tickets cost $1 and you can purchase it in advance on gov web site. Don’t plan on buying it at the trailhead, because the tickets can sell out in advance and cellular service is limited.
