Walking distance from Casa Cocol. Locals call it MUGY. In my opinion, it is one of the best places to taste Yucatecan food. It has a very nice courtyard that adds to the experience and a backyard where you can witness how "cochinita pibil" is cooked in an underground oven. There are also ladies making fresh tortillas in the traditional way. Food, drinks and atmosphere are very good. Reasonable prices too.

It has a very nice courtyard that adds to the experience and a backyard where you can witness how "cochinita pibil" is cooked in an underground oven. There are also ladies making fresh tortillas in the traditional way. Food, drinks and atmosphere are very good. Reasonable prices too.
Highly rated restaurant with delicious seafood. Octopus is a favorite.

Izamal , the yellow city is just a 40 min. drive from Merida. Its convent honoring the virgin of Izamal has the most spectacular courtyard. You can visit the pyramid of Kinich Kakmo. I strongly reccomend eating in" Kinich" just beside the pyramid entrance. One of the most famous restaurants for Yucatecan food.

1. Plaza Grande-Main Square. Surrounded by beautiful buildings such as Museo Casa Montejo (worth a visit once they reopen). San Ildefonso Cathedral and Palacio de Gobierno del Estado de Yucatan. Live music and events are held there almost every night.
2. Museo de Arte Contemporaneo (MACAY Museum). Facing the Plaza Grande features temporary and permanent exhibitions of Mexican contemporary artists. Free entrance.
3. Palacio de la Musica. Interactive museum and concert hall. Outstanding modern architecture. 8 halls featuring the musical heritage of Mexico.
4. Mercado Municipal Lucas Galvez. The main market where you can find all kinds of produce, spices and "recados" or spice pastes to cook traditional dishes. It is also the place with least expensive eateries in town. You can also find hammocks, henequen, palm, wood and clay crafts. It is always busy.
5. Pinacoteca Juan Gamboa Guzman. A 17th century building featuring colonial and 19th century art. Entrance is just 45 pesos. Just across the street facing the park Hidalgo is Mansion Merida Hotel which originally was Merida's Casino. A very beautiful building with a wonderful patio.
