Food scene - Where are the best places to go in Merida?

In the last five years, Merida has really exploded as a travel destination and likewise the culinary scene has changed and improved dramatically as new chefs have arrived and new places have opened. "Back in the day..." everyone would head to Apoala and Chaya Maya fresh off the plane. These places are still excellent but the scene has evolved and there are SO MANY new and interesting options to try. We have put together a list of interesting places worth heading to. Some are new and some are old favorites. Something for everyone! Saludes!

Sightseeing

The Yucatan has many many sites and attractions worth visiting. A little farther afield, the town of Valladolid east near the pyramids of Chichén-Itzá and the many amazing cenotés in the area surrounding it, the polychromatic cathedral at Uayma, the yellow city of Izamal, there are many many sights to explore and things to see. Closer to Merida, there are many wonderful Hacienda's and Mayan archeological sites south of the city surrounding Uxmal. We have listed some of those here. Also closer to Merida are many cenotés worst a trip. Either way, the countryside of the Yucatan is worth exploring! Although one should always exercise caution, I have always felt safe driving in the Yucatan. The roads are well traveled and there are police checkpoints throughout the state.

On the way to Celestun, stop off and take one of the many tours offered to see the flamingos in the lagoon. There are many small boats parked at this site and you can arrange to have a guide take you on a boat tour to see the migrating flamingos and a tour of the mangrove forest on the perimeter of the lagoon. A fun way to spend an afternoon!

One of the great Mayen archeological sites. The Mexican government has been doing a lot of restoration work at the site and it really does show. Do not miss this on your trip to merida. Rarely crowded and an easy hour south of the city on well traveled highways. While you are there, don't miss some of the smaller lesser known sites including Sayil, Xlapak, Labna and Kabah.

The Gran Parque "La Plancha" is an amazing addition to Merida. It extends for miles and has playgrounds for kids and walking paths for leisurely strolls. It really is an impressive place. Its brand new so tree cover is a little lacking (but when it grows in ... wow!). Go after dinner in the restaurant zone (along 47). The park is right at the eastern most end of 47 and you can walk along the path and enjoy the park. People are out walking, biking, playing. Sometimes there are concerts and other events going on... Its wonderful!

These salt flats on the north side of the Yucatan are a nice day trip from the city. They are unique in their colors and have become famous from the millions of selfies taken at this site. Day trips from Cancun bring bus loads of international tourists to the location. It's pretty and its fun but in the summer its dusty and windy.

The town of Homún is surrounded by Cenotes. A trip here will provide a number options depending on the type of experience you want. Some cenotes are well traveled and developed, some are simply a hole in the ground with a ladder. Depending on your sense of adventure, you are sure to find something here! Typically you park and a donkey train (yes its a thing!) takes you around to two or three different Cenotes to explore. Bring a towel and a hat!

Beaches

There are many excellent beach options for visitors to Merida. From Sisal to Telchac. Most beaches are much less developed than what you typically think of in the 'The Yucatan". The beaches most people are familiar with are in fact in Quintana Roo state which is on the east coast of the Yucatan Peninsula and has hundreds of miles of shore facing the Caribbean Sea. These are the developed and tourist packed beaches - Cancun, Playa del Carmen, Tulum etc. The beaches of the Yucatan State, easily accessible from Merida are much different and less crowded. These are the beaches of the Gulf and tend to be quieter and much less developed. Most are simple little fishing villages that have a small public beach. They can be windy and the sand is not coral based like the Caribbean Sea but limestone based which makes it less sparkly and less fluffy but still plentiful and white! A great drive to see the coast is to drive up to Progreso and head east along the coast through the old coconut plantations all the way to Dzilam de Bravo. Along the way, you will drive through dozens of small fishing villages and never lose sight of the water. The beaches we highlighted below are especially nice. Also worth a stop is San Crisanto which is becoming increasingly popular!
Sisal is a great option for those looking for a day at the beach. There are several good dining places and a clean and welcoming beach great for swimming.

El Cuyo is at the eastern most part of the Yucatan. It is about a 2.5 hour drive from Merida. It is just now being discovered and some are calling it the next Holbox. It is a very small beach renowned for its kite surfing. Its location at the convergence of the Caribbean and Gulf creates this wind and people travel from all over the world to kite surf here. There are several excellent pro shops which offer lessons and rent equipment if you want to give it a go. Either way, it is a charming little beach town with a great vibe.
