Magical place for a picnic, a favourite 'wild swimming' spot with the locals, also for launching sup-boards etc. Check tide-times and go at high-tide for jumping off the quay. Lovely at sunset with the rooks roosting in the Scott's Pines. Take a stroll around the island to take in the beauty of Strangford Lough.

Heard of St Patrick's Day? There's more to the man than green beer and leprechauns, a great place to find out more. Saul Church, Patrick's first church in Ireland, is one mile from the cottage, (though the road isn't very safe for pedestrians). Allegedly both St Patrick and St Brigid are buried at the cathedral.

We call it 'The Secret Beach', be prepared to walk cross-country for a mile but also to be rewarded with a deserted, gently shelving, sandy beach with rock pools and beautiful aspect. Worth discovering.

Walk about 1 mile along the Quoile River footpath for a 'breath of fresh air' and scenic beauty. Turn left out of the drive, cross the main road, continue straight and downhill, then bear right, passing picnic area on the left. Cross road to the old quay wall, bear right to find entrance to footpath. Beautiful river walk with swans, ducks, the odd deer, friendly robins used to being fed by regulars. About a mile to the end, then turn and retrace your steps. Home for crumpets by the fire and a cup of tea!

Wonderful for walks, either around the lake, through the formal gardens or off the beaten track via the Temple of the Winds. Downtown Abbey fans will enjoy a house tour for an insight into how the upper crust used to live and all that upstairs/downstairs stuff. Lovely gift shop, bookshop and cafe too. If you're lucky you might see Red Squirrels near the lake... National Trust so it costs (a lot) if you aren't members, best to check it out online before you drive there. A great day-out destination and an excuse to drive across on the ferry from Strangford to Portaferry, it is a beautiful 30min drive from there. Stop at Greyabbey afterwards for refreshments and antique shopping!!
