In one of the states most rugged areas, South Mountain State park features elevations of 3,000 feet, an 80 foot waterfall , mountain streams, and more than 40 miles of trails for hikers, equestrians, and mountain bikers. A true backcountry experience is offered at 24 backpacking campsites at seven locations. Equestrian camping is available with trailer parking and barn to complement 33 miles of bridle trails. Mountain bikers enjoy a strenuous 17-mile loop. Drive-to campsites sit beside the Jacob Fork River, with the river and its tributaries offering miles of trout fishing. There are two picnic areas and a picnic shelter for groups. A visitor center offers museum-quality exhibits on the cultural and natural history of the South Mountains.

Along the trail are picnic shelters and open tables, acessible restrooms, a playground, fishing piers, canoe launches, a gazebo, multi-level observation decks, and pedestrian bridges which cross the river and its tributaries.

Table Rock is a mountain in the east rim of Linville Gorge, part of Pisgah National Forest in North Carolina. It features a distinctive rock formation, and is a prominent peak in the area. The peak makes for a quick hike from a nearby parking area, and is also very popular for rock climbing. One of our favorites!

Table Rock is a mountain in the east rim of Linville Gorge, part of Pisgah National Forest in North Carolina. It features a distinctive rock formation, and is a prominent peak in the area. The peak makes for a quick hike from a nearby parking area, and is also very popular for rock climbing. One of our favorites!
The trail to get there is 5.5 miles total, but this is considered a moderate hike. You can expect to gain 1,200 feet in elevation on your way out and coming down on your way back.
Once you’ve made it, you’ll take in the beauty of the land below you. Shortoff is a reasonably popular trail in the area due to the views at the end

Fonta Flora is a loop trail open from April to December. The loop is only 3.7 miles in length, and you’ll gain a little over 300 feet in elevation.

Fonta Flora County Park and Connector Trailhead
126 NC-126Fonta Flora is a loop trail open from April to December. The loop is only 3.7 miles in length, and you’ll gain a little over 300 feet in elevation.
This path offers forest, river, and mountain views all in one. While this is considered a moderate hike, it is still considered kid and dog friendly.
Trails near the Linville Falls Visitor Center lead to the breathtaking three-tiered Linville Falls over the Linville Gorge via both strenuous and moderate hikes. The steep-walled Gorge is known as the “Grand Canyon of the Southern Appalachians.” Linville Falls is probably the most famous waterfall in the Blue Ridge. The trails include four overlooks to the waterfalls, where wildflowers and foliage abound along the way. *Please note that climbing on rocks or swimming in the water around Linville Falls is prohibited. About an hour away from the cottage!

Lake James State Park offers a full menu of activities. Along with boating, swimming and fishing in the beautiful, clear waters of the 6,812-acre lake, there are 25 miles of trails, 15 of which are open to mountain biking. We recommend CBS Sports for canoe/kayak rentals . More rentals are available on the lake James state park site.
