Grandfather Mountain is an iconic peak 75 miles north of Asheville, N.C. just off of the Blue Ridge Parkway in Western North Carolina. The area is known for its incredible vistas and unmatched ecological diversity. On a clear day at Grandfather Mountain (elevation 5,945 feet), you can see the Charlotte skyline 90 miles away. The area is called Grandfather Mountain because of early pioneers who recognized "the face" of an old man on one of the cliffs.

The Grove Arcade was one of the first indoor shopping malls in all of the country, which makes it a unique mix of historical and fun on this list of places to go in the city of Asheville. Like many spots in this North Carolina city, it has existed for almost a century. The architecture is pretty interesting and there’s a good mix of stores inside, with eclectic options ranging from galleries to restaurants and from bars to bookshops. Here’s a fun fact: the Grove Arcade was used by the American Government during World War II and was only leased back to Asheville in the year 1997!

Hiking

South of Asheville, the Blue Ridge Parkway meanders through some exceptionally stunning landscapes. The oddly-named but easily-accessed Fryingpan Mountain is no exception: rising roughly 350 feet from a trailhead on the Parkway, the views from the mountain’s summit are sweeping and broad. And, thanks to the historic, 70-foot-tall steel fire lookout tower at the mountain’s summit, the views are even better: a short climb up the tower reveals incredible panoramas of the nearby peaks of Looking Glass Rock, Mt Pisgah and Cold Mountain.

Mt Pisgah rises sharply from the National Forest that shares its name, easily visible from downtown Asheville on a clear day. And the mountain’s iconic, classic shape and towering television tower make the summit and easily visible from nearby mountaintops, like Fryingpan Mountain to the south. The mountain is rooted deeply in Asheville history, the former site of the Vanderbilt family’s Buck Springs Lodge, a hunting outpost southwest of the beloved Biltmore Estate.

Hike to stunning summit views at Craggy Pinnacle, exploring an exceptionally beautiful forest just off the Blue Ridge Parkway and climbing through abundant blooming Catawba rhododendron. The Blue Ridge Parkway meanders along a towering ridge crest, offering some pretty exceptional roadside views from this historic and iconic American drive. Given the Parkway’s lofty elevations, many hikes off the Parkway don’t need to trek far to score some fantastic panoramic views or explore unique, high-elevation forests. The Craggy Pinnacle Trail is a prime example: it’s a short trail, spanning less than a mile round trip, but the trail’s pinnacle views are simply stunning, offering sweeping summit vistas from a pair of high-elevation overlooks.

A high-elevation hike through a northern hardwoods forest. Difficulty: Difficult Length: 4.8 miles round-trip Two trails start at Walker Knob Overlook. The Mountains-to-Sea Trail with its characteristic white circles starts from the middle of the parking area. This hike on the Big Butt Trail goes up from the left side, in back of a wooden sign which says "Little Butt 3 miles," a slight overestimation. Little Butt is our destination; Big Butt, itself, is overgrown and without a view.

We live near the heart of it! Just across the French Broad River from downtown, West Asheville (28806) is a mecca for originality. For the past few years, people have flocked to this funky neighborhood, either to visit or buy a quaint cottage within walking distance of the many new businesses that have opened in the area. Haywood Road has been the main street of West Asheville for more than a century. Old buildings are now home to modern businesses, but the street still has a small hometown feel. As you walk down the street, you will see old buildings renovated for new businesses side-by-side with second- and third-generation shops. There are now many restaurants, breweries, pubs with frequent live music, bakeries, a variety of resale consignment shops, vintage clothing boutiques and even a half-dozen record shops lining the road that appeal to visitors interested in sampling the unique, bohemian flavor of Asheville. Carrier Park and French Broad River Park are popular for picnicking, hiking, and river views.

LOCATED IN SOUTH ASHEVILLE The Town of Biltmore Forest. One of Asheville's flagships communities. This lovely town is adjacent to George Vanderbilt's "home" known as the Biltmore Estate. This community was originally built for folks in the 1920s who didn't have quite as much income as the Vanderbilts. There are no gates or guard houses like many of Ashevilles other luxury home areas. This town was incorporated in 1923 and it is an historic district. Population 1,500 and the 359th largest community in NC. Many amenities found in this neighborhood. Beautiful turn of 20th century homes interspersed with modern homes. Residences range from vintage 1920s homes to grand residences with new construction. While eclectic this town boasts a sense of grandeur and elegance with tree lined sidewalks. Very much a community feel. Being fairly central in location, it is close to shopping, downtown Asheville and many area schools.
