Parks & Nature

Parque Juarez—also called the French Park—is the largest green space within San Miguel’s city center. It’s got fountains, winding paths, basketball courts, and public classes in tai chi, yoga, and zumba. The annual Candelaria plant sale that takes place in February is based here, as is the La Calaca festival in November. It’s quiet, peaceful, and safe. White egrets nest in the trees here despite municipal attempts to drive them out. Just above the park is Chorro, a steep winding street that runs past a row of public washing basins that are still being used. The spring (chorro) that originally fed the basins was found when San Miguel was first established. There are often public cultural even

Much of San Miguel’s splendor can be discovered in its abundance of man made beauty, but at El Charco del Ingenio, nature is the aesthetic draw. At this more than 170-acre botanical garden set in an ecological preserve, you’ll have the chance to spot wildlife, walk along greenery-lined trails and learn about various species of local cacti. Meanwhile, the San Miguel community often gathers in the garden to watch performances, partake in ceremonies and attend environmental education programs. Recent travelers recommend enjoying a hike through the park, picnicking alongside the waterfalls or spending an evening at a concert in the outdoor amphitheater. Mercado de Artesanias (The Artisan Market) is open daily from 9 am until 7 pm. Each stall is overloaded with hand-crafted items. Jewelry stalls sell pendants and rings, some of which are made from local stones such as Mexican jade or shaped like skulls. Hand-painted, traditional Mexican ceramics are piled high alongside hanging lamps and Oaxacan rugs and clothing. Even the souvenirs at touristy stalls are hand-painted. A cascade of hats falls from one man’s stall and live birds in cages are the feature of another. Mercado de Artesanias stretches from a large undercover area, in which there is a mix of craft stalls and food stalls selling local honey, handmade sweets and medicinal herbs. Sell

A textile mill from 1902 to 1991, Fabrica La Aurora has since become an art-lover’s paradise in northern San Miguel. Just a short walk north from El Jardin, the converted factory shows evidence of the site’s history, including oil-stained floors and traces of cotton tucked into crevices. If you’re looking to shop, you’ll be satisfied by the diverse selection at furniture, jewelry and contemporary art stores that pepper the complex. After you’ve spent plenty of time eyeing paintings and sculptures, switch your focus from palette to palate with a stop at one of Fabrica La Aurora’s restaurants like the Food Factory or Café de la Aurora. Arts & Culture

This beautiful former monastery of La Concepción church was converted into a fine-arts school in 1938. Don't miss the murals of Pedro Martínez, plus the Siqueiros Room, which features the extraordinary unfinished mural by David Alfaro Siqueiros (it plays with your mind – we won't spoil the surprise). The rest of the gallery holds temporary exhibitions. It is located less than 5 minutes from the main square in Street Hernandez Macias that parallels Hidalgo street which leads right in the Main Garden. It is walking through this beautiful area worth, visit its art galleries and get you some photos on your patio or in one of the arches of the first floor, but if you are thinking that the arts

Entertainment & Activities

This is the premier place to see a play or a concert. It’s located in the heart of downtown at the corner of Hernandez Macias and Mesones. Built in 1873, the theater was opened by the reigning queen of opera in Mexico, Angela Peralta. Thanks to extensive improvements, the sound is excellent and there isn’t a bad seat in the house. On your way in, take note of the mural “Homage to the Arts” in the main lobby. The theater hosts ensembles during the Chamber Music Festival in August, jazz plays during the Cervantino Festival in October, and concerts during the International Jazz Festival in November, as well as weekly events by local and visiting artists.

One of the best views over the town and surrounding country is from the mirador (overlook) southeast of town. Take Callejón del Chorro, the track leading directly downhill from here, and turn left at the bottom to reach El Chorro , the spring where San Miguel was founded (note the fountain and public washing tubs). El Mirador is a place both day and night offers one of the best views of San Miguel de Allende, is a must to take pictures and take a nice souvenir of the city point.
