Thd moat was originally built by the Normans and featured a motte and bailey castle. The existing structure on top of the moat is a much later addition built c1818. It was used to store the explosives for the blasting involved in the construction of the harbour. You can enjoy fabulous views of the town, harbour, the Scottish coast and the Isle of Mann on a clear day. A recent addition this year has been the installation of a camera obscura which is due to open Autumn 2021.

The perfect spot to admire the view to Scotland. Recently restored and home to a camera obscura, the Moat is open on Saturdays and Sundays , May - September.
