This hike is also in Shining Rock Wilderness Area. It's a bit longer than Black Balsam, but more interesting along the way. We've done it with small children and would highly recommend it.

Sam Knob is in the Black Balsam area, off the Blue Ridge Parkway. Accessible in winter from Hwy 215 S of Canton, when the Parkway is closed.
