Humpback Bridge lays claim to being the oldest of Virginia's remaining covered bridges. Located in Alleghany County, just west of Covington, it was built in 1857. It was part of the James River and Kanawha Turnpike and succeeds three other bridges at the site. It stretches over Dunlap Creek, a tributary of the Jackson River that joins the Cowpasture River near Iron Gate to form the James River. Humpback Bridge is a wonderful place for everyone - you can enjoy scenic views, a picnic, etc at this beautiful historic part of our community.

Historic Humpback Bridge was built in 1857. It is one of the few remaining covered bridges in the United States. Epic scenery! You can fish swim and picnic during your visit.

Humpback Bridge is the only covered, humpback bridge remaining in the United States. It's also a cherished landmark, now listed on the National Register of Historic Places, where residents and visitors alike gather for picnics, photos or simply to admire her beauty and craftsmanship.
